Funny Kids Story: Pickle the Cat Saves the Day
Most cats are busy napping on sunny windowsills, chasing red laser dots, or knocking cups off tables. Pickle was not most cats.
Pickle believed—deep in his whiskery heart—that he was destined for greatness. Not just chasing-toy-mouse greatness, but full-blown save-the-world greatness.
The problem? Pickle lived in Mrs. Doodle’s house, and Mrs. Doodle’s idea of excitement was knitting sweaters for her teapots. Yes, teapots. Each one had a name and a sweater. Earl Grey wore stripes. Chamomile had flowers. Oolong had a sweater with buttons because Mrs. Doodle said he was “a fancy boy.”
Pickle couldn’t care less about sweaters. He wanted danger. Adventure. Snacks. Preferably snacks first, then danger.
Chapter 1: The Strange Noise in the Yard
One morning, Pickle was patrolling the backyard fence (he called it “guard duty,” but really he was waiting for the neighbor’s bird feeder to spill sunflower seeds). Suddenly, he heard it:
“Wobble-wobble… plorp.”
Pickle froze. His ears twitched. That was not a bird sound. That was not even a dog sound. It sounded like a tub of jelly trying to learn how to dance.
He leapt down, tail high, and padded toward the noise. Under the old apple tree was a glowing blob. It looked like lime Jell-O but kept wiggling like it was alive.
“Identify yourself!” Pickle demanded. (Out loud it came out as “Mrrrow!” but in his mind, it was very heroic.)
The blob burped. “I am… Globulon. From Planet Goo-Goo.”
Pickle tilted his head. “Right. Of course you are.”
Chapter 2: A Mission Too Big for a Cat (Maybe)
Globulon explained—while hiccupping slime everywhere—that he had crash-landed on Earth. His spaceship was broken, and worse, he’d dropped his “Mega-Gloop Crystal,” which apparently powered his ship and prevented catastrophic explosions.
Pickle only understood two things:
-
There was something shiny lost in the yard.
-
If they didn’t find it, something might blow up.
This, Pickle decided, was his big chance.
“I’ll help you,” he announced. “But in return, you owe me tuna snacks. The fancy kind in the shiny tin.”
Globulon agreed immediately. (Aliens don’t know much about tuna, but they do know how to negotiate when the world’s at stake.)
Chapter 3: The Hunt for the Crystal
The crystal had apparently bounced away during the crash. Pickle and Globulon searched the yard first. They found:
-
Mrs. Doodle’s lost knitting needle.
-
A dead beetle (which Pickle tried to eat, then spat out dramatically).
-
Three socks that did not match each other.
No crystal.
So they moved into the neighborhood. This was slightly inconvenient because Globulon had to disguise himself. His idea of a disguise was wearing one of Mrs. Doodle’s teapot sweaters. He chose the striped one. Now he looked like a wobbly, oversized kiwi fruit.
Children on scooters pointed and laughed. One kid yelled, “Nice sweater, Jell-O!” but Globulon just waved proudly.
Chapter 4: Trouble with the Dog Squad
While searching near the park, they ran into the Dog Squad—three bulldogs who considered themselves the bosses of the block.
“What’s this?” growled Bruno, the leader. “A cat… and his… pudding?”
Pickle puffed up his fur. “Stand aside, dog breath. We’re on an intergalactic mission.”
The bulldogs howled with laughter. But then Globulon got nervous and accidentally sneezed. His slime-sneeze stuck the dogs’ paws to the ground like glue.
“HEY!” barked Bruno, thrashing around.
“Oops,” said Globulon.
Pickle flicked his tail smugly. “Justice.”
Chapter 5: The Crystal Is Found (Sort Of)
At last, they spotted the crystal in the fountain at the town square. It shimmered, glowing like a green popsicle of doom. Unfortunately, three ducks had claimed it as their new toy.
Ducks, in case you didn’t know, are jerks.
Every time Pickle tried to leap into the fountain, the ducks flapped their wings and splashed water in his face. Globulon wobbled forward, but the ducks just quacked and pecked at him like he was dessert.
This was a serious problem. Heroes don’t usually get defeated by ducks.
So Pickle thought hard. Then he remembered Mrs. Doodle’s yarn bag. He dashed home, grabbed a ball of red yarn, and returned.
He tossed the yarn into the fountain. Ducks are secretly obsessed with yarn (no one knows why). They immediately abandoned the crystal to chase the floating string.
Pickle pounced and snagged the glowing crystal in his teeth. Victory tasted like metal and danger.
Chapter 6: The Goodbye Nobody Expected
Globulon was overjoyed. With the crystal back, he could repair his ship and return to Planet Goo-Goo.
“I will miss you, small furry Earth hero,” Globulon said, wiping a slime-tear.
Pickle pretended to lick his paw casually. “Yeah, yeah. You’ll probably write songs about me. Just don’t forget the tuna.”
True to his word, Globulon left behind a small tin can, glowing faintly. When Mrs. Doodle opened it later, it wasn’t tuna. It was a never-ending supply of fish treats that refilled itself every night.
Pickle nearly fainted with joy.
Epilogue: A Cat of Destiny
From that day on, Pickle was no ordinary housecat. He still napped on the sofa and occasionally knocked Mrs. Doodle’s teapots off the counter (purely by accident, of course).
But every time he saw the stars outside the window, his whiskers twitched. Somewhere out there, space jelly creatures owed him snacks. And if the world ever needed saving again, Pickle would be ready—probably after his nap.
Because even heroes need naps.
