Pickle was not most cats.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"510\">Pickle believed\u2014deep in his whiskery heart\u2014that he was destined for greatness. Not just <em data-start=\"435\" data-end=\"454\">chasing-toy-mouse<\/em> greatness, but full-blown <em data-start=\"481\" data-end=\"497\">save-the-world<\/em> greatness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"816\">The problem? Pickle lived in Mrs. Doodle\u2019s house, and Mrs. Doodle\u2019s idea of excitement was knitting sweaters for her teapots. Yes, teapots. Each one had a name and a sweater. Earl Grey wore stripes. Chamomile had flowers. Oolong had a sweater with buttons because Mrs. Doodle said he was \u201ca fancy boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"936\">Pickle couldn\u2019t care less about sweaters. He wanted danger. Adventure. Snacks. Preferably snacks first, then danger.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"941\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"990\">Chapter 1: The Strange Noise in the Yard<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1182\">One morning, Pickle was patrolling the backyard fence (he called it \u201cguard duty,\u201d but really he was waiting for the neighbor\u2019s bird feeder to spill sunflower seeds). Suddenly, he heard it:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1209\">\u201cWobble-wobble\u2026 plorp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1211\" data-end=\"1366\">Pickle froze. His ears twitched. That was <em data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1258\">not<\/em> a bird sound. That was not even a dog sound. It sounded like a tub of jelly trying to learn how to dance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1533\">He leapt down, tail high, and padded toward the noise. Under the old apple tree was a glowing blob. It looked like lime Jell-O but kept wiggling like it was alive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1647\">\u201cIdentify yourself!\u201d Pickle demanded. (Out loud it came out as \u201cMrrrow!\u201d but in his mind, it was very heroic.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1706\">The blob burped. \u201cI am\u2026 Globulon. From Planet Goo-Goo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1761\">Pickle tilted his head. \u201cRight. Of course you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1766\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"1821\">Chapter 2: A Mission Too Big for a Cat (Maybe)<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1823\" data-end=\"2061\">Globulon explained\u2014while hiccupping slime everywhere\u2014that he had crash-landed on Earth. His spaceship was broken, and worse, he\u2019d dropped his \u201cMega-Gloop Crystal,\u201d which apparently powered his ship and prevented catastrophic explosions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2099\">Pickle only understood two things:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2202\">\n<li data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2148\">\n<p data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2148\">There was something shiny lost in the yard.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2202\">\n<p data-start=\"2152\" data-end=\"2202\">If they didn\u2019t find it, something might blow up.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2204\" data-end=\"2247\">This, Pickle decided, was his big chance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2355\">\u201cI\u2019ll help you,\u201d he announced. \u201cBut in return, you owe me tuna snacks. The fancy kind in the shiny tin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2357\" data-end=\"2485\">Globulon agreed immediately. (Aliens don\u2019t know much about tuna, but they do know how to negotiate when the world\u2019s at stake.)<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2490\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2534\">Chapter 3: The Hunt for the Crystal<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2652\">The crystal had apparently bounced away during the crash. Pickle and Globulon searched the yard first. They found:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2815\">\n<li data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2693\">\n<p data-start=\"2656\" data-end=\"2693\">Mrs. Doodle\u2019s lost knitting needle.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2694\" data-end=\"2768\">\n<p data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2768\">A dead beetle (which Pickle tried to eat, then spat out dramatically).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2769\" data-end=\"2815\">\n<p data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2815\">Three socks that did not match each other.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2817\" data-end=\"2830\">No crystal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2832\" data-end=\"3093\">So they moved into the neighborhood. This was slightly inconvenient because Globulon had to disguise himself. His idea of a disguise was wearing one of Mrs. Doodle\u2019s teapot sweaters. He chose the striped one. Now he looked like a wobbly, oversized kiwi fruit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3095\" data-end=\"3211\">Children on scooters pointed and laughed. One kid yelled, \u201cNice sweater, Jell-O!\u201d but Globulon just waved proudly.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3213\" data-end=\"3216\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3262\">Chapter 4: Trouble with the Dog Squad<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3264\" data-end=\"3390\">While searching near the park, they ran into the Dog Squad\u2014three bulldogs who considered themselves the bosses of the block.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3392\" data-end=\"3462\">\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d growled Bruno, the leader. \u201cA cat\u2026 and his\u2026 pudding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3464\" data-end=\"3553\">Pickle puffed up his fur. \u201cStand aside, dog breath. We\u2019re on an intergalactic mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3555\" data-end=\"3710\">The bulldogs howled with laughter. But then Globulon got nervous and accidentally sneezed. His slime-sneeze stuck the dogs\u2019 paws to the ground like glue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3712\" data-end=\"3752\">\u201cHEY!\u201d barked Bruno, thrashing around.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3778\">\u201cOops,\u201d said Globulon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3780\" data-end=\"3824\">Pickle flicked his tail smugly. \u201cJustice.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3826\" data-end=\"3829\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"3831\" data-end=\"3879\">Chapter 5: The Crystal Is Found (Sort Of)<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3881\" data-end=\"4065\">At last, they spotted the crystal in the fountain at the town square. It shimmered, glowing like a green popsicle of doom. Unfortunately, three ducks had claimed it as their new toy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4067\" data-end=\"4111\">Ducks, in case you didn\u2019t know, are jerks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4113\" data-end=\"4319\">Every time Pickle tried to leap into the fountain, the ducks flapped their wings and splashed water in his face. Globulon wobbled forward, but the ducks just quacked and pecked at him like he was dessert.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4321\" data-end=\"4394\">This was a serious problem. Heroes don\u2019t usually get defeated by ducks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4396\" data-end=\"4522\">So Pickle thought hard. Then he remembered Mrs. Doodle\u2019s yarn bag. He dashed home, grabbed a ball of red yarn, and returned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4524\" data-end=\"4690\">He tossed the yarn into the fountain. Ducks are secretly obsessed with yarn (no one knows why). They immediately abandoned the crystal to chase the floating string.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4692\" data-end=\"4792\">Pickle pounced and snagged the glowing crystal in his teeth. Victory tasted like metal and danger.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4794\" data-end=\"4797\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"4799\" data-end=\"4844\">Chapter 6: The Goodbye Nobody Expected<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4846\" data-end=\"4949\">Globulon was overjoyed. With the crystal back, he could repair his ship and return to Planet Goo-Goo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4951\" data-end=\"5031\">\u201cI will miss you, small furry Earth hero,\u201d Globulon said, wiping a slime-tear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5033\" data-end=\"5157\">Pickle pretended to lick his paw casually. \u201cYeah, yeah. You\u2019ll probably write songs about me. Just don\u2019t forget the tuna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5159\" data-end=\"5361\">True to his word, Globulon left behind a small tin can, glowing faintly. When Mrs. Doodle opened it later, it wasn\u2019t tuna. It was a never-ending supply of fish treats that refilled itself every night.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5363\" data-end=\"5396\">Pickle nearly fainted with joy.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5398\" data-end=\"5401\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"5403\" data-end=\"5436\">Epilogue: A Cat of Destiny<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5438\" data-end=\"5614\">From that day on, Pickle was no ordinary housecat. He still napped on the sofa and occasionally knocked Mrs. Doodle\u2019s teapots off the counter (purely by accident, of course).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5616\" data-end=\"5841\">But every time he saw the stars outside the window, his whiskers twitched. Somewhere out there, space jelly creatures owed him snacks.
